Deltas are the result of interacting river and marine systems. They are rich of natural resources and lots of environmental function since the deposits from the river made the surrounding land extremely fertile. Nile and Mekong are two examples of the most productive agricultural land. Deltas are also home for a unique ecosystem and made life possible for hundreds of thousands of people. People have lived in the delta region for thousands of years. Many cities are located in the delta region such as Jakarta, Cairo, Calcutta, Shanghai, Bangkok, Ho Cho Minh, New York, etc. Generally speaking, deltas provide opportunities due to their strategic locations connecting rivers and inland waters to the oceans.
Despite opportunities they offered, deltas also have many challenges due to rapid growth of human population and intensive development particularly in the delta. These pose a major threat to the natural ecosystems and their wildlife. The delta characteristics make them vulnerable to many problems including sedimentation, salt water intrusion, water pollution, forest destruction, environmental degradation, etc.
During this conference, scientist will share experiences, ideas and scientific researches on topics such as delta development and changes, data availability, utility, accessibility and interoperability for supporting Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction and Poverty Alleviation Strategy on the delta and coastal lowland. Additionally, this forum will also be organized for policy makers, water managers, users, economist, educators, and practitioners who concern to the delta and coastal lowland.
