04 Fractured Basement Reservoirs from Surface to Subsurface, Sumatra Field Trip 2011

Workshop and Fieldtrip: BASEMENT FRACTURED RESERVOIR FROM SURFACE TO SUBSURFACE

November 13th-18th, 2011 - Pekanbaru-Bukittinggi-Padang
Instructor: Ir. Benyamin Sapiie Ph.D

Course Description

In most case, basement fractured reservoir is considered as unconventional plays where permeability and porosity is mainly control by the occurrence of interconnected open fractures. Fracture reservoir is a reservoir in which naturally occurring fractures significantly enhance fluid productivity. The main important issues in basement fractures reservoir are fractures intensity and density as well as process which control their occurrence. Fractures behavior can be easily predict using kinematic analysis (strain) approach using present-day structural pattern such as faulting and folding. Fractures will develop if stress values bigger than elastic strength of the rocks. It means that fractures will concentrate in the high stress regions. Based on experiments supported by field observation, fractures density/intensity increases toward the fault plane. It concluded that fault will have certain width of fractures zone. This evidence can be used as geological boundary for fractures modeling. In addition to faulting, folding will create high strain area due to bending or maximum curvature which observes from various outcrops
Basement fractured reservoir potential have recently become one of the most important exploration target in the western Indonesia particularly In the Sumatra Island. Numerous wells were penetrated basement and showed evidence of hydrocarbon occurrences. Moreover, significant gas production in South Sumatra Basin is contributed from basement fractured reservoir. However, in most case understanding their occurrences, distributions and relationship to hydrocarbon migration is unclear.

The main purpose of this workshop is to explore evidence and deep understanding of basement fractured reservoir using subsurface data compared with results from outcrop observations. Hopefully, the participants can have better understanding in term of geometry, style and characteristic of the fractures both surface and subsurface data. Understanding fractured as reservoir or fluid flow path is very important not only for oil and gas industry but also for others field such as geothermal and mineral deposits.

About Instructor:

DR. Benyamin Sapiie is an expert in structural geology and tectonics experienced for more than 20 years in the field of oil and gas in Indonesia. His works covered many areas in geology both exploration and development particularly in the field of structural geology. He had experienced working in various basins from western to eastern Indonesia including as international consultant in exploring Cambodia Basin. Recently, he has been involved as geomechanics expert in the deep borehole nuclear waste project at NSE MIT. He published numerous papers in the field of structural geology for both international and national journals. He works as consultant for various major oil companies in Indonesia.
